In cases where high-level hygienic conditions must be met or maintained, contact-free safety sensors often replace the conventional electromechanical safety switches to secure safety guards on machinery and plants. The entirely smooth surfaces of these sensors and their actuators enhance the cleaning operations and avoid dirt deposits. Another advantage is that they are also suitable for concealed mounting behind non-magnetic materials.
For these applications, Steute has developed the BZ 16, a safety sensor with supplementary advantages. The safety sensor tolerates larger misalignment of the guard door compared to safety switches, thus increasing the function. The special operating principle of this sensor, in which the sensor and the actuator communicate via coded signals and use two different types of signal transmission, guarantees a high level of safety: the sensors are suitable for applications in control category 4 following EN 954-1 or PDF-M following EN 60947-5-3.
The current version of the BZ 16 with protection class IP 67 was already suitable for hygienic applications, for example in the foodstuffs industry. Now Steute has thoroughly changed the enclosure and the sealing of the BZ 16 to develop a version which even resists high-pressure cleaning. The new BZ 16 with protection class IP 69K is therefore of particular advantage in cases where high-level hygienic conditions need to be met or maintained, or on machines and plants which are regularly cleaned using hot water and high pressure.
