A man goes into a bar and orders a pint of beer, a large red wine, a brandy, a gin and tonic, a vodka and orange, and a whisky, which he then proceeds to drink. “Crikey,” says the barman, “that’s quite an order.” Another man comes up to the bar, and orders ten times what the first man is drinking. “Now that,” says the barman, “is an order of magnitude.” Okay, so it’s an old joke, but the maths jokes are always the best ones. And it does illustrate a point: that even terms which seem a bit woolly sounding do actually, in scientific terms, have very precise meanings.

SICK gets an "˜app' for vision at UKIVA Show

SICK will be returning to the UKIVA Machine Vision Conference with news of its new AppSpace programming environment and how the concept is starting to bear fruit for automation and robotics development. At last year's event, SICK successfully launched AppSpace, an open software platform that allows free and flexible customisation of applications on SICK programmable sensors and devices. Rather than being restricted to the available pre-developed proprietary software, AppSpace enables system integrators, Original Equipment Manufacturers and end-users to develop their own tailor-made devices with "˜click-and-drop' ease.

Motor change saves a fish feed producer 135,000kWh per year

A Denmark-based specialist in aquafeed production has replaced an ageing, damaged DC motor on its principal extruder with a Dyneo motor from Leroy-Somer, part of the Nidec group. The investment is providing the company with significant savings in energy costs – in excess of 135,000kWh per year.

First keynote speech for UKIVA Machine Vision event announced

The first Keynote presentation for the UKIVA Machine Vision Conference and Exhibition will be delivered by Henry Harris-Burland, VP Marketing from Starship Technologies, creators of self-driving delivery robots. He will give a presentation outlining the capabilities of the robot and discuss the future, what they've learned so far, the challenges they have faced, social acceptance and more. Starship robots are advanced personal delivery devices that carry items within a 2-mile (3km) radius, using pavements to make their deliveries.
